Schema Markup for Calgary Businesses: How to Win Featured Snippets and AI Citations
Schema markup is one of the most powerful and underused SEO tools available to Calgary businesses. It is structured data you add to your website’s code that helps search engines understand exactly what your business does, where you are located, what services you offer, and what your customers say about you. When implemented correctly, schema markup can help you win featured snippets, appear in rich results, and get cited by AI search engines.
Despite its power, most Calgary businesses have zero schema markup on their websites. This is a massive competitive advantage waiting to be claimed.
What Is Schema Markup?
Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary of tags that you add to your website’s HTML to help search engines interpret your content. Think of it as a translation layer between your website and Google. Without schema, Google has to guess what your content means. With schema, you tell Google explicitly.
For example, without schema, Google sees a phone number on your page as just a string of digits. With LocalBusiness schema, Google knows that 403-408-6389 is the phone number for ScopeX Media, a digital marketing agency located in Calgary, Alberta, that is open Monday through Friday.
Types of Schema Every Calgary Business Should Implement
LocalBusiness Schema
This is the most important schema type for any Calgary business. It tells Google your business name, address, phone number, hours of operation, geo-coordinates, payment methods, and service area. This directly supports your Google Business Profile and local pack rankings.
Service Schema
Service schema lets you define each service you offer with a description, price range, and service area. This helps Google match your business to specific service searches. A Calgary plumber can use Service schema to define Drain Cleaning, Water Heater Installation, and Emergency Plumbing as distinct services with descriptions and pricing.
FAQ Schema
FAQ schema turns your frequently asked questions into rich results that appear directly in Google search results. Each question and answer pair gets its own expandable listing, taking up more real estate on the results page. This is also one of the most effective ways to get your content cited by AI search engines, since AI models parse FAQ schema to generate answers to user queries.
Review and AggregateRating Schema
Review schema displays star ratings directly in search results, which dramatically increases click-through rates. If you have strong Google reviews, this schema makes them visible before the searcher even visits your website.
BreadcrumbList Schema
Breadcrumb schema helps Google understand your site structure and displays a navigational path in search results instead of a raw URL. This improves click-through rates and helps Google crawl your site more efficiently.
How Schema Helps You Win in AI Search
AI search engines like Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, and ChatGPT rely heavily on structured data to generate accurate, specific answers. When an AI model needs to answer a question like “What digital marketing agencies in Calgary offer SEO services under $500 per month?” it looks for structured data that provides that exact information.
Businesses with comprehensive schema markup are significantly more likely to be cited in AI-generated responses than businesses without it. This is because schema removes ambiguity and gives AI models the structured, reliable data they prefer to cite.
How to Add Schema Markup to Your Calgary Business Website
There are several ways to implement schema markup. WordPress users can use plugins like Rank Math or Yoast SEO, which have built-in schema generators. You can also use Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper to generate the code manually. For custom implementations, your web developer can add JSON-LD schema directly to your page templates.
After implementing schema, validate it using Google’s Rich Results Test tool to ensure everything is formatted correctly and eligible for rich results.

Important Update: Google Retired FAQ Rich Results in May 2026
This changes the standard advice about schema, and a lot of guidance online has not caught up.
As of 7 May 2026, Google no longer displays FAQ rich results in Search. The expandable question-and-answer dropdowns that used to appear under listings are gone, and support was subsequently removed from Search Console reporting and the Rich Results Test.
What that does not mean: FAQPage markup is not deprecated, will not trigger a penalty, and does not need to be stripped out of your pages. It remains a valid Schema.org type and it still helps machines parse your content. What it does mean is that adding FAQ schema purely to win a bigger search listing no longer works, and any agency still selling it on that basis is selling something that stopped existing.
The practical takeaway is a shift in why you would use it. FAQ markup is now an answer-engine play rather than a search-appearance play.
Which Schema Types Still Earn Their Keep
For a Calgary service business, these still produce visible or functional benefit:
- LocalBusiness and its subtypes. The foundation. Name, address, phone, hours, service area, price range. This is what tells search engines and AI assistants what kind of business you are and where you operate.
- Organization. Establishes your business as an entity, with sameAs links to your verified profiles. Entity recognition is increasingly how AI systems decide whether to cite you.
- Service. Describes what you actually sell, ideally with an offer catalogue and real prices. Vague service markup helps nobody.
- Review and AggregateRating. Star ratings still appear in some contexts. Note that self-serving review markup on your own site is against Google guidelines; this should reflect genuine third-party reviews.
- BreadcrumbList. Still displayed, still improves how your URL reads in results.
- Article. For blog content, helps with attribution and author association.
Schema for AI Citation, Which Is the Real Opportunity Now
The reason to care about structured data in 2026 has less to do with Google’s blue links and more to do with whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI summaries can confidently describe your business.
These systems need to resolve who you are, what you do, where you operate and whether you are credible on a topic. Structured data does that resolution work explicitly rather than making a model infer it from prose. The properties that matter most are the ones most businesses skip: areaServed, knowsAbout, sameAs, opening hours, and an offer catalogue with real numbers in it.
A business with complete, accurate structured data is simply easier to cite correctly. That is the whole mechanism. There is no trick to it, and there is no way to fake it, because the markup has to match what is visibly on the page.
Frequently Asked Questions About Schema Markup
Should I remove FAQ schema now that Google dropped the rich results?
No. Google has said unused structured data does not cause problems, and FAQPage is still a valid type that helps AI systems extract question-and-answer pairs. Leave it in place; just stop expecting it to change how your listing looks.
Does schema markup directly improve rankings?
Not directly. Structured data is not a ranking factor in the way content and links are. It affects how your result is understood and displayed, which affects click-through, which affects performance. The benefit is real but indirect.
What format should schema be in?
JSON-LD, which Google explicitly recommends. It sits in a script tag rather than being woven through your HTML, which makes it far easier to maintain and much harder to break accidentally.
Can I have too much schema?
You can have wrong schema, which is worse than none. Marking up content that is not visible on the page, inflating review ratings, or describing services you do not offer all risk a manual action. Accuracy matters more than volume.
How do I check my schema is valid?
Use Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator. Bear in mind the Rich Results Test now only reports on features Google actually supports, so valid markup for a retired feature will simply not appear there.
